Running Quotes

Here is a list of my favorite running quotes.  I look at these for inspiration or sometimes just a great laugh.

“It hurts up to a point and then it doesn’t get any worse.”
– Ann Trason

“I’m going to go out a winner if I have to find a high school race to win my last race.”
– Johnny Gray

“Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.”
– Jules Renard

You have to forget your last marathon before you try another. Your mind can’t know what’s coming.
– Frank Shorter

To a runner, a side stitch is like a car alarm. It signifies something is wrong, but you ignore it until it goes away.
– Author Unknown

“Fear is a great motivator.”
– John Treacy, 1984 Olympic silver medalist

“The body does not want you to do this. As you run, it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong. You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy…It is not age; it is not diet. It is the will to succeed.”
– Jacqueline Gareau, 1980 Boston Marathon champ

Long distance running is 90% mental and the other half is physical.
– Rich Davis

I always loved running… it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs.
– Jesse Owens

Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired. When you were younger the mind could make you dance all night, and the body was never tired…You’ve always got to make the mind take over and keep going.”
– George S. Patton, U.S. Army General and 1912 Olympian

“Run so hard you come in with bloody feet and missing toenails”
– -Rob Decestella

“Pain is temporary; finishing is forever.”

“It’s not 13.1 miles … it’s seven water stops.”

“Find your limits and exceed them.” – Lynn Strickland

Here are some of my own running quotes.  I call them, running quotes from Raul Alanis. 🙂

“There’s something about running that keeps me coming back.  There’s a feeling I get when the soles of my shoes crash against the pavement and a surge of power overtakes me.  In those moments I feel like I can control my own destiny and that I am truly capable of anything.  I never really know how far I can go or for how long, but in my mind it’s forever.  If you see me running and I’m smiling, or even if I am not smiling, then you will know that I am exactly where I want to be…”

“Want to know that a runner looks like?  Run around the block and then look in the mirror.”

“I don’t always run because I want to or because it gives me some great satisfaction, but rather, I run because I can.”

“Sometimes the best run is the hardest run.  It’s when your body wants to stop, but your mind fights to keep going.”

“Some people drink or do drugs to escape…I run.  Don’t worry, it’s a healthy addiction.”

“Running isn’t always going to be your best friend.  It just needs to be an acquaintance.”

“You don’t always have to love running.  You just have to like it enough to keep doing it.”

“I don’t always love running, but I sure as hell love finishing!”

“Running isn’t the difficult part.  It’s making yourself start running that’s the struggle.  The pavement is always calling…pick up!!”

  1. Help… I am self-publishing a book targeted toward the competitive and recreational running and multi-sport community. I am seeking contact information for Lynn Strickland to request permission to use the quote – “Find your limits and exceed them”. I appreciate and help in my efforts to locate Lynn Strickland.
